A portion of the site that once contained a vacant shopping center on Independence Boulevard will be redeveloped to accommodate a dealership.

An affiliate of Charlotte-headquartered Sonic Automotive Inc. (NYSE:SAH) recently acquired about 10 acres at 3700 E. Independence Blvd. for $6 million to develop its used-dealership concept, EchoPark, according to Chris Bitterlin, who is heading up the redevelopment of Coliseum Center. The center will be rebranded as Coliseum Crossing as part of the $35 million overhaul.

The Charlotte Business Journal previously reported that Sonic Automotive had plans to develop a roughly 30,000-square-foot EchoPark dealership on a portion of the 18.3-acre site. EchoPark Automotive, which launched in 2014, offers used cars, trucks and SUVs. There are currently several EchoPark locations in Colorado, and the automotive retailer previously announced plans to open dealerships in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Texas.
